China Adventure: The Pearl Market

The next stop on our Shanghai day tour was one of the Pearl Markets. We learned how to tell fake pearls from real and the difference between fresh water pearls and sea pearls. The place was HUGE and had every color of pearls you can imagine. A very fun experience.

And yes, I picked up a few strings myself (an early Christmas present from my sweet husband). They were just too cheap to pass up!

This boat was in the entry of the store. It's one huge piece of jade carved into an elaborate boat. Very cool.

Our guide explaining the difference between fresh water pearls and sea water pearls. Freshwater oysters can have up to a dozen or even more pearls inside and they are rarely perfectly round. Sea water oysters only contain one pearl and are usually round.

This photo gives you an idea of how big the store is - unbelievable how many pearls they had!!

All different colors - I didn't get a picture of some of the other colors - blue, purple, brown ...

The lady below is making the string I purchased a bit longer. How cool is that? You try it on, tell them how long you want it to be and they customize it right then and there.
